SEZON MUSEUM OF MODERN ART: Photographs by Mikiya Takimoto
A Photography Exhibition Celebrating the Reopening of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art
To commemorate the 45th anniversary reopening of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art, the Sezon Museum of Modern Art Foundation will present a photography exhibition by Mikiya Takimoto at Sezon Art Shop in Yokohama Minato Mirai from August 8 (Sat.) through November 9 (Mon.), 2026.
Exhibition Overview
Since its opening in 1981, the Sezon Museum of Modern Art has remained committed to presenting artistic expressions that reflect the spirit of their time. This exhibition features a new series of photographs by Mikiya Takimoto, created to mark the museum’s reopening. Responding to the museum’s architecture, gardens, and the natural landscape of Mount Asama, Takimoto photographed with a large-format 4×5 film camera, quietly observing the interplay of light, air, and the passage of time. His photographs capture moments as they naturally emerged, preserving the subtle atmosphere and presence of the place on film.Forty-five years ago, during the museum’s inaugural exhibition Marcel Duchamp, John Cage gave a performance at the museum. His seminal work 4′33″ proposed a new way of experiencing art—not through producing sound, but by listening attentively to the sounds already present in the world. Takimoto’s way of seeing resonates with this same sensibility, revealing the quiet presence of light, air, and time while casting new light on the museum’s forty-five-year history of artistic exploration.Through Takimoto’s photographs, visitors are invited to encounter landscapes where the geological memory of Mount Asama and the creative legacy cultivated by people quietly converge.
Exhibition Highlights
1. Twenty-three New Photographs by Mikiya TakimotoThe exhibition features twenty-three new photographs created with a large-format 4×5 film camera. Responding to the museum’s architecture, gardens, and the natural landscape of Mount Asama, Takimoto’s works were carefully developed and printed in the darkroom, revealing the subtle qualities of light, atmosphere, and the passage of time that cannot easily be captured through digital photography.
2. The Museum’s First Photography Exhibition, Accompanied by a PhotobookThis is the first photography exhibition presented by the Sezon Museum of Modern Art. A photobook featuring the photographs created for this exhibition (scheduled for publication in September 2026) will also be released, offering a record of Takimoto’s unique perspective on the museum’s architecture, gardens, and the landscapes that have shaped its forty-five-year history.
