Resonance
Located within the ART FORUM, the museum shop serves as a passage from the museum into everyday life—a place where the materials shaped by the Earth encounter human perception and imagination.
Born through the Earth’s natural processes and formed over vast spans of time, stone, minerals, glass, metal, wood, clay, and lacquer are the fundamental elements that give life to the works presented here. Each can be seen as a fragment of the Earth’s memory.
These materials are more than mere substances. They embody the energies and passage of time from which they emerged, while also reflecting the creative dialogue between artist and material. Through these works, visitors are invited to discover the stories and temporal depth embedded within each medium.
In the café, you can experience many of these materials firsthand by holding the vessels in your hands and appreciating their texture, weight, and tactile qualities. Beyond simply looking, touching allows you to connect more intimately with the unique character and beauty of each material.

Conceived by sculptor Isamu Wakabayashi, the ART FORUM is connected to the Plateau, the central open space within the museum garden where diverse elements come together to form a single landscape.
Since the museum’s opening in 1981, the space has served as a site for significant artistic encounters. During the inaugural Marcel Duchamp Exhibition, John Cage presented a live performance here, and in later years it became the setting for an installation by Anselm Kiefer.
Today, the ART FORUM continues to function as a place where the museum’s accumulated layers of time, memory, materiality, and the experiences of its visitors quietly resonate with one another.
