Scenery Only Seen from There
Amid this grand story of the Earth, there is a place that quietly continues to radiate its own light: the Sezon Museum of Modern Art, spread across the foothills of Mount Asama.
Since opening in 1981, the museum has spent more than 45 years exploring human emotion and the landscapes that unfold within it through the artistic expressions of each era.
Our pursuit has never been limited to creating or presenting beauty alone. Rather, we have sought the creative force that stirs emotion, transforms our perception of the world, and brings us closer to the essence of what it means to be human. Like the geological strata layered beneath a volcano, these endeavors have accumulated slowly and continuously over time.
Today, we wish to reconsider human emotion within the vast timescale of the Earth itself.
Emotion, too, emerges from the materials and passage of time that shape this planet—it moves, changes, and circulates without end. Deep within our bodies and our capacity to perceive lies a living connection to the forces of the Earth.
The span of human civilization is but a fleeting moment when viewed against the history of the Earth and the universe. Some of the starlight we see overhead has traveled for thousands of years before reaching our eyes. From such a perspective, the Earth itself is not a finished entity, but a planet still in the process of becoming.
Standing within that ongoing process, we open this museum as a place to engage with human emotion and artistic expression. Here, where the immeasurable time flowing from the Earth’s depths converges with human endeavor, we encounter something extraordinary.
Perhaps that convergence is itself a kind of miracle.
