Tadanori Yokoo’s fateful encounter with the major Picasso retrospective in 1980 marked a turning point in his career. From 1981 onward, he embarked on a new path as a painter, transforming himself from a world-renowned graphic designer into an artist devoted to painting. Since then, he has continued to reinvent himself, never remaining bound to a single style or mode of expression. This exhibition provided a comprehensive overview of Yokoo’s artistic production since 1981, revealing the ever-changing nature of his creative practice as a painter.
The exhibition featured seven ceramic works created specifically for the occasion, 19 oil paintings produced after his transition to painting, 50 silkscreen prints, and 40 large-scale oil paintings. During the exhibition period, Yokoo also presented a live painting performance.
