Collection of Sezon Museum of Modern Art Sen-shi-ban-ko

1

Sen-shi-ban-ko, also known as Sen-ko-ban-shi, describes a scene in which flowers of countless colors bloom in profusion. Like this phrase, the exhibition presents an unusually large number of diverse works, displayed across both the walls and the floor. This very abundance is the first concept of the exhibition. The second concept is another well-known saying: “Every past was once a future.” The works brought together here are not limited to contemporary art. They transcend time, ranging from ancient bronze mirrors, iron bowls from the Nanboku-chō period, mandalas from the Kamakura period, ceramics, Edo-period lacquerware, nihonga, and Western-style paintings, among others. How will these works harmonize with the celebrated modern and contemporary masterpieces in the Sezon Collection, including works by Klee, Fontana, Rothko, Pollock, and Jasper Johns? Or will they fiercely compete with one another? Please enjoy this exhibition space of endless contemplation.
