George Segal

Recent 15 years

Poster Design: Shin Matsunaga

1

This exhibition marked George Segal’s second solo exhibition in Japan, following George Segal: The Silent American Scene, held at the Seibu Museum of Art and the Takanawa Museum of Art in 1982. It focused on works produced during the fifteen years between the two exhibitions.
Known for his white plaster figures, Segal’s sculptures became increasingly rich in colour during the 1980s, and by the time of this exhibition many had taken on a predominantly black surface. Beyond these visible changes in appearance, the exhibition revealed a deepening of the artist’s introspection and insight into the human condition through 28 sculptures and 13 drawings.
Gay Liberation (1980), which was exhibited in the 1982 exhibition, is now in the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art and remains on permanent display.
