Serge Poliakoff
Having fled Moscow for Paris following the Russian Revolution, Serge Poliakoff continued to live and work in Paris for the rest of his life. A pivotal moment in his artistic development came in 1937, when he met Wassily Kandinsky, an encounter that encouraged his move toward abstraction. In the postwar years, Poliakoff became one of the leading figures exploring the possibilities of abstract painting in France.
This exhibition, the first retrospective of Poliakoff’s work to be held in Japan, presented a total of 69 works spanning his career. Composition (c. 1958), which was included in the exhibition, is now part of the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art.
