Isamu Noguchi and Rosanjin Kitaoji
Isamu Noguchi, one of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century, was also a pioneering designer whose activities extended beyond stone sculpture to encompass environmental design, monuments, gardens, and lighting works such as the Akari series. During his visit to Japan in the early 1950s, Noguchi was deeply influenced by the vernacular qualities he encountered at the residence of Kitaoji Rosanjin in Kita-Kamakura, leading him to create works that incorporated Japanese aesthetics, including ceramics and Akari light sculptures.
Through the works of these two artists, the exhibition explored the aesthetic sensibilities and concepts of space that underpinned their creative practices.
Noguchi’s Rain Mountain (1982) and Snow Mountain (1982) are held by the Sezon Museum of Modern Art as outdoor sculptures in the Museum garden.
