Natsuyuki Nakanishi
The Seibu Museum of Art had previously organized solo exhibitions of leading figures in contemporary Japanese art, including Shusaku Arakawa, Tadanori Yokoo, and Hisao Domoto. Natsuyuki Nakanishi was also among the artists featured in the museum’s inaugural exhibition, A View of Contemporary Japanese Art (1975), and his work continued to be introduced through subsequent exhibitions. This exhibition examined Nakanishi’s engagement with painting, focusing on works from the 1980s while also exploring the experimental practices that informed their creation.
The Sezon Museum of Modern Art holds a substantial group of Nakanishi’s works, including examples from Hopscotch at the Summit, arc, arc ellipse, and Painting on the Edge series, all of which were included in this exhibition.
