Kengiro Azuma

Poster Design: Shin Matsunaga

1

This exhibition was the first major retrospective in Japan of Kengiro Azuma, who had spent more than thirty years in Italy and had gained international recognition as the sculptor of the MU series. After studying under Marino Marini, Azuma developed the MU series, which became central to his artistic practice. At the time of the exhibition, he was in the process of transitioning to the YU series.
The exhibition brought together 165 works, including sculptures, reliefs, paintings, and drawings. Among them were works originally exhibited in the Kengiro Azuma exhibition held in 1968 as the inaugural installment of Milan’s Strada della Scultura (Sculpture Route) project, a public initiative promoting contemporary sculpture throughout the city.
Yu-6 (1987), which was included in this exhibition, is now held by the Sezon Museum of Modern Art as part of its garden sculpture collection.
