Karel Appel
Karel Appel joined the avant-garde art movement CoBrA in 1948 and established a distinctive position through his vividly colored, highly energetic expressionist style. This exhibition was the first full-scale retrospective of Appel’s work in Japan, presenting more than forty years of his artistic production through 61 paintings, 12 sculptures and reliefs, and 20 drawings.
Untitled (1963), which was included in the exhibition, is now in the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art.
