Abakanowicz

Poster Design: Shin Matsunaga

1

This retrospective, the first major exhibition in Japan devoted to the Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz, presented a comprehensive overview of her work. The exhibition featured the Abakans series of fiber works from the 1960s and 1970s, her figurative group sculptures developed from the 1970s onward, as well as bronze sculptures, monumental works in wood and iron, and drawings.
Abakanowicz’s works derive their power not only from the individual pieces themselves but also from the spaces they create. For this reason, the installations at each of the four venues on the exhibition tour were designed by the artist herself in response to the specific characteristics of each museum space.
40 Warsaw Backs (1990–1991), exhibited in this exhibition, is now part of the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art and remains on permanent display.
