In 1995, Horizon: Apocalypse, an exhibition of collaborative works by Keiji Usami and the poet Takashi Tsujii (the pen name of Seiji Tsutsumi), was held at Nantenshi Gallery. Following the exhibition, Silver Grey (1994–1995), from the artist’s book Horizon: Apocalypse, and the eight drawing series Horizon: Apocalypse—Eight Focuses (1994–1995) entered the museum’s collection.
This work consists of a large drawing executed on a ground prepared with gin-nezu (silver-gray pigment mixed with animal glue), which serves as the overall composition. From this image, eight individual drawings were subsequently derived.
For each of these eight drawings, Tsujii wrote a corresponding poem. These poems were later expanded and developed into the long narrative poem Nanmei: Tabi no Owari (1997). The book features a work by Keiji Usami as its cover illustration.
