The first version of this work featured a photograph of the eye of Kiki de Montparnasse, Man Ray’s lover and muse. Kiki served as a source of inspiration for many artists and appeared as the model in numerous photographs by Man Ray. Among them, Le Violon d’Ingres (1924), in which f-holes are painted on Kiki’s back to resemble a violin, became one of his most celebrated works. The eye was later replaced with that of Lee Miller, Man Ray’s next companion, after their relationship had ended and she had married. Originally titled Object to Be Destroyed (or Object of Destruction), the work was accompanied by instructions written by Man Ray specifying that its ultimate purpose was to be destroyed. Ironically, a student actually carried out this act during an exhibition, smashing the object. When it was subsequently reconstructed, it was given the new title Indestructible Object. In this version, produced in 1970, the photograph depicts the eye of Juliet Browner, Man Ray’s final wife.
