Untitled SF52-0111 was created in 1952, the same year that Sam Francis held his first solo exhibition in Europe at Galerie du Dragon. As seen in paintings from this period, such as Blue Black and Black and Yellow, Francis began incorporating black into his work in the early 1950s.
In this painting, irregular forms resembling petals or cells in red, blue, and yellow fill the surface, displaying subtle variations in tone and intensity. These forms are partially overlaid by black petal-like shapes, which cover much of the composition while leaving traces of yellow lines visible beneath. What emerges here is a profound exploration of space and light through color. The black passages allow a sense of light to appear from behind the surface, while the contrast between luminous yellow and the darkness of black heightens the intensity of each. At the same time, black appears to recede into depth as yellow advances toward the viewer, creating a spatial effect generated entirely through color.Rather than relying on clearly defined forms or lines, Francis allows color itself to expand endlessly across the canvas, producing a dynamic sense of light, space, and movement.
