On the right, we can see a plump red bird, and on the left, a bird drawn only with lines and possessing a sharp beak—two birds depicted in the work. Birds appear frequently in Ernst’s works as symbolic figures. When he was a child, his beloved pet bird died at the time of his sister’s birth, giving rise to an image of death exchanged for life. As such, the bird appears as a kind of alter ego for him, a guide into the world of his works. In the background, we see what could be a sun setting over a pastoral landscape of layered hills composed of gentle curves, or perhaps a moon floating in the night sky. The composition strongly resembles that of A Very Quiet Evening (1957), a work from the same year depicting an orange sun sinking into the valley of a rural landscape. From that celestial body extends a line that connects to the two birds, and further links the birds to each other. Within this, we can sense Ernst’s unconscious feeling of unity with nature, as well as the imaginative power that enables new ideas to emerge when things that should never meet come together and form connections.
