Around 1963, Hisao Domoto began working on his Solutions de continuités series. This work was created as part of that ongoing body of work. Countless circles are spread across a red ground, creating the impression of forms multiplying across the picture plane. During this period, works in the Solutions de continuités series were given titles such as “Constellation” and “Planet,” evoking celestial bodies and outer space. Through the repetition of circular forms, Domoto generated new configurations and spatial relationships within the composition.
In 1970, Domoto worked in New York in preparation for a solo exhibition at the Martha Jackson Gallery, and works from this series were also included in Origins of Contemporary Art: Martha Jackson Gallery Collection, held at Seibu Department Store in 1971. Compared with the Solutions de continuités works of the 1960s, the materiality of paint is reduced here, while colors and geometric forms are rendered with greater clarity, resulting in a more minimalist visual language. At the same time, the fundamental concept of the series—a two-layered pictorial structure consisting of a background color and repeated forms—remains consistent. These layers exist in a relationship of both contrast and integration. This approach to generating geometric forms and multiple spatial layers would become an increasingly important feature of Domoto’s later works.
