Around 1963, Hisao Domoto began working on his Solutions de continuités series. The series was developed through various combinations of colors, including gold leaf, white, and red and black. In this work, thick black bands are repeatedly layered over a uniformly painted red ground. The composition evokes the shutters commonly found on European windows and is inspired by their structure, which blocks light and views while still allowing air to pass through. Through the gaps between the softly contoured black bands, the sharply defined red surface intermittently appears and disappears, creating a distinctive tension within the picture plane. Through this structural approach to painting, Domoto moved beyond Informel painting and opened up a new pictorial territory. In 1964, the year this work was created, ten works from the Solutions de continuités series, Nos. 1–10, were exhibited at the 32nd Venice Biennale, where Domoto was awarded the Arthur Leywin Prize.
