Neutralizing Subjectivity means setting aside preconceived ideas and habitual assumptions such as “this is a circle” or “this is a cross,” and looking at things again through their most basic elements.
In this exercise, forms that we normally perceive as unified shapes are broken down into the fundamental components of points, lines, and planes. For example, a cross (×) is viewed not as two intersecting lines, but as the point where those lines meet. Likewise, a circle is considered not as a shape in itself, but as an enlarged point. The exercise further explores how a moving point creates a line, and a moving line creates a plane, encouraging us to reinterpret seemingly complex forms as combinations of simpler elements.
By analyzing objects in terms of their constituent parts, we can step away from fixed ways of seeing—our tendency to define things as “this” or “that”—and become open to perceiving them in new and more flexible ways.
