This exhibition was the first full-scale retrospective of Anselm Kiefer to be held in Japan. Bringing together approximately 70 works created between 1969 and 1992 from museums and private collections around the world, it presented a comprehensive survey of Kiefer’s career, including his iconic large-scale paintings, early watercolors, recent monumental sculptures, and unique handmade books.
A second venue featured the installation Die Frauen der Revolution, consisting of fourteen lead beds. Based on the major traveling retrospective organized in the United States between 1987 and 1988 (including the Philadelphia Museum of Art), the exhibition was conceived by its curator, Mark Rosenthal, in collaboration with the artist himself, and was realized after several years of planning.
Die Frauen der Revolution (1992), shown in this exhibition, subsequently entered the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art, where it remains on permanent display.
