This exhibition was organized as part of JAPAN TODAY IN SCANDINAVIA, a cultural program jointly planned by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassies of Japan in the Scandinavian countries. It toured four Nordic capitals—Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Reykjavik—from November 1990 to August 1991 under the title JAPAN ART TODAY: Elusive Perspectives / Changing Visions.
Following the tour, a commemorative homecoming exhibition, JAPAN ART TODAY: Diversity in Contemporary Art—Return Exhibition from the Four Nordic Countries, was held at the Sezon Museum of Modern Art from November 24 to December 24, 1991.
The exhibition presented approximately 40 works by 12 artists whose innovative practices had gained recognition in Japan during the 1980s and who were expected to play leading roles in the future of contemporary Japanese art. Among the participating artists, works by Shinro Ohtake, Kenjiro Okazaki, Atsuhito Sekiguchi, Toeko Tatsuno, Kazumi Nakamura, Yasumasa Morimura, Tomiaki Yamamoto, and Mika Yoshizawa are included in the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art.
