Collection of Sezon Museum of Modern Art Hand and Eye
Human beings create things through the movement of their hands. Before a work of art comes into being, there may exist a desire to touch the scenes and objects before our eyes, or an impulse to grasp—or even become one with—an “other” that appears separate from ourselves by giving it new form and texture.
Those who encounter works of art are likewise stirred by various impulses. When we see works whose ideas emerge from their materials, works rich in texture that invite us to imagine touching them, or works that make us feel united with the landscapes and experiences perceived by the artist, we may find ourselves imagining entirely new worlds through things we have never seen before.
Creative activity can be said to arise through this chain of responses. When creating or viewing a work of art, what kinds of senses are we actually sharpening? Human beings possess a vital capacity for perceiving the world that cannot be divided simply into touch or sight alone. Our bodies are filled with ways of sensing and engaging with the world.
Through the impulses that arise when the human body first encounters the “texture of the world,” this exhibition introduces works from the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art.
