Lucio Fontana
This exhibition introduced the work of Lucio Fontana at a time when he was still relatively little known in Japan. It presented a broad survey of his career, ranging from his early sculptures to the celebrated Spatialist works in which he cut or punctured the picture surface, as well as his late works, including Spatial Environments.
As the Seibu Museum of Art increasingly shifted toward exhibitions designed to attract larger audiences, Seiji Tsutsumi opened a gallery called The Contemporary Art Gallery on the fine arts and crafts floor of the Seibu Department Store Ikebukuro flagship store in 1983. Conceived as a site for experimental activities that could stimulate and challenge the museum itself, the gallery presented solo exhibitions by artists who might not otherwise be featured at the museum. Tsutsumi also acquired works exhibited there on occasion.
One of the works included in this exhibition, Concetto Spaziale–Attese (1965), had previously been shown at The Contemporary Art Gallery. At the time, Tsutsumi was photographed together with the work in his Ikebukuro office by the photographer Ikko Narahara. Concetto Spaziale-Swuercio Verde (1962) and Concetto Spaziale–Attese (1965) are now in the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art.
