This exhibition marked the tenth installment of the ART TODAY series, which began in 1986. Looking back on the history of the series, the accompanying text reaffirmed the view that exhibitions should serve as places where artists’ works are made accessible to audiences, and that museums should act as minimal mediators in that process. It also identified a critical engagement with postmodernism and an ongoing examination of contemporary art and society as central concerns of the early ART TODAY exhibitions. While the Museum’s collection activities preserve the past, ART TODAY was positioned as an effort to present artistic practices unfolding in the present, offering an opportunity to reconsider the relationship between the museum and contemporary art.
