Art Today 1996

Miki Ukai, Hiroshi Kuroda, Katsue Sukenari, Daisuke Mizushima

1

This exhibition was inspired by René Magritte’s The Treachery of Images (“This Is Not a Pipe”) and sought to reconsider the very notion of “contemporary art.” In the aftermath of the Cold War and the decline of established ideologies and value systems, the concept of contemporary art itself could no longer be taken for granted. Through the fundamental question of what constitutes contemporary art, the exhibition explored the diverse forms and possibilities of artistic expression at the end of the twentieth century.
