Art Today '93
Eriko Hidaka, Azby Brown, Takashi Murakami, Yoo Hee Chang
This exhibition was conceived as an exploration of what constitutes “Japanese-ness” in contemporary Japanese art. The subtitle, Neo-Japanology, sought to reconsider diverse perspectives and modes of expression in contemporary art through the works of four artists, while avoiding fixed notions of Japanese culture or simplistic cross-cultural comparisons. Rather than defining “Japanese-ness” as a particular style or set of values, the exhibition approached it as a dynamic concept shaped by continual transformation and reinterpretation, exploring both its possibilities and its challenges.
