This exhibition was inspired by Walter Benjamin’s essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.” Rather than serving as the exhibition’s theme, the subtitle was intended to reflect questions that emerged during the planning process. Marking fifty years since Benjamin’s discussion of the “age of mechanical reproduction,” the exhibition reconsidered the changing nature of art in an era shaped by the continued development of reproductive technologies, as well as the question of the “aura.”
