The inaugural edition of Art Today, conceived as a platform for the emergence of contemporary art rather than simply a venue for its display, featured works by Keiji Usami, Tatsuo Kawaguchi, Shiro Kuramata, Satoshi Saito, and Shuichi Shima. With Yoshiaki Tono serving as guest curator, the exhibition brought together painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and design through the perspectives of six participants. Crossing the boundaries between disciplines, it presented a new dimension in which diverse forms of expression intersected and merged, while reexamining the nature and possibilities of contemporary art.
Launched at the Seibu Museum of Art in 1977, the Art Today series was subsequently carried on by the Sezon Museum of Modern Art beginning in 1986.
