The title of this work, consisting of three peaches aligned beneath clouds of cotton floating in a blue sky, is a linguistic play that combines the French words pêche (peach), paysage (landscape), and nuage (cloud). Like Man Ray’s celebrated work Prayer (1930), the three peaches evoke the image of the female body, particularly the buttocks. The motif of three fruits arranged together also recalls a familiar theme in Western art. As symbols of beauty and sensuality, the peaches suggest the Three Graces, the goddesses of Greek mythology who embody authority, wisdom, and beauty. Frequently depicted as beautiful nude figures set within idyllic landscapes, the Three Graces provide a poetic association through which the soft flesh and rounded forms of the peaches can be imagined as the graceful curves of the female body.At the same time, the work demonstrates Man Ray’s delight in visual as well as verbal transformation. Through an assemblage of cotton, peaches, simple painted elements, and a wooden box, he constructs a three-dimensional equivalent of a landscape painting. The result is a work filled with wit, visual surprise, and playful associations that extend beyond language itself.
