This work was commissioned by the Sezon Museum of Modern Art for the exhibition ENGINE: The Brain in Motion (2019).
Created on canvas specially sourced from Kurashiki, Okayama—Ono’s hometown—the work was produced through a repetitive process of applying highly concentrated ink washes and dense layers of ink. Ono repeats these procedures until, in his words, “the work acquires its own force.” Some works reach completion in a single attempt, while others require the process to be repeated many times.
In this work, the weave of the canvas replaces the vertical columns of ink often seen in Ono’s earlier paintings. The fabric’s texture captures and reflects light, while the diffusion of color, rather than the accumulation of layered pigments, brings the weave itself into relief. Through this interaction between medium and support, the work reveals a multiplicity of viewpoints and perceptual possibilities.
