Created in 1955, this work is structured around the contrasts of black, blue, yellow, green, and red, with dripping red forms projecting prominently into the foreground. Through the contrast and arrangement of four colors—believed to be Terre Verte, Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Red, and Yellow Ochre, which Francis initially purchased in tubes—together with black, the painting creates an impression that contrasts sharply with Untitled SF52-0111.The proliferation of dripping red forms first began to appear in works such as the oil painting For Fred (1949), and subsequently developed into a more powerful and dynamic use of red.
Around 1950, Francis’s paintings often emphasized white alongside red; however, black gradually became more prominent, and the resulting contrasts with darker colors brought about noticeable changes in both the quality of light and the sense of space. Whereas Untitled SF52-0111 evokes light emerging from behind layers of black, the present work captures light overflowing from the spaces between the red forms.
