In Shingo Francis’s works, layers of color that deepen according to the viewing angle and interference pigments whose appearance constantly changes with light naturally encourage viewers to move their bodies, while also imparting a sense of movement to lines and planes. In doing so, the works remind us that light itself is what gives color to our perception.
In this work, as the viewer follows the bands of color stretching across the surface like a horizon, rendered in gouache and acrylic, the lines appear to swim across the paper through the effects of light. By moving around the work in a circular manner, the viewer’s own passage of time gradually converges with the movement of the lines. In this way, one comes to experience physically a sensation of moving “Bound for eternity,” as suggested by the title.
