Preparation for The Umbrellas Project began in 1984, culminating in the installation of 3,100 giant umbrellas in Ibaraki, Japan, and Los Angeles County, California, from 9 to 26 October 1991. Blue umbrellas were densely arranged across the humid rural landscape of Japan, while yellow umbrellas were dispersed across the dry grasslands of California, emphasizing the environmental and cultural differences between the two regions. The project extended beyond the final installation itself, encompassing years of planning, negotiation, and participation by local communities, and was received differently in each location.
At the origin of this ambitious undertaking were Christo’s drawings, in which the project first took shape. Drawings related to The Umbrellas were exhibited while the project was still in development in the exhibition Christo held at Takanawa Museum (Karuizawa) and Seibu Museum of Art (Ikebukuro) in 1987. In 1999, this drawing entered the museum’s collection. Although the realization of Christo’s large-scale projects depended upon collaboration with countless individuals, drawing remained the one place where he could freely visualize his ideas on his own. More than preparatory sketches, these works are records of an imagination in motion and essential tools for transforming vision into reality.
The project was financed through the sale of such drawings and related works, and collectors were regarded as participants in the realization of the project. Yet the process of bringing these ideas into the world involved numerous challenges, including financial pressures, complex human relationships, and unforeseen accidents. As such, Christo’s work also raises a broader question about creative freedom: whether it lies in preserving an ideal within the realm of imagination, or in generating new possibilities through engagement and friction with the outside world.
