The Epinal Project was an urban planning proposal developed by Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins for the city of Épinal in eastern France. Although it was never realized, it reflected their belief that architecture should not be understood merely as a collection of buildings, but as a device capable of transforming human perception and bodily experience.
The project envisioned the entire city as an experimental environment, incorporating undulating surfaces, unpredictable pathways, and a wide variety of colors and forms. In such a setting, people would engage with their surroundings through continuous physical interaction in everyday life.
Underlying the proposal was the idea that human behavior and thought are often unconsciously shaped by the environments we inhabit. By creating spaces that resist habit and familiarity, Arakawa and Gins sought to stimulate perception and cognition, ultimately reimagining what it means to live and experience the world.
