The Mechanism of Meaning is a body of work conceived by Shusaku Arakawa and his partner, the poet Madeline Gins. Through this work, they undertake a rigorous exploration of what we commonly understand as “meaning” through language. The series consists of 127 works in total, including 81 large-scale paintings, 44 drawings, as well as photographs and models.A key point of departure in this work is the perception of oneself as a “blank.” For Arakawa, the blank is a field of potential energy. By approaching each work without preconceptions, viewers are invited to explore how consciousness is constructed and how meaning comes to be perceived.Arakawa also believed that architecture could serve as a means of resisting death: when consciousness inhabits the body as its vessel and continues as life, a space beyond mortality becomes possible. Engaging with The Mechanism of Meaning invites us to generate our own consciousness and to consider the mechanisms through which perception enables us to live.
